For few hours the city modifies its own face, rhythms bend down. Being the commercial life temporary suspended in the festive day, the town seems to fall asleep. They represent the halls of the Municipal City Council of different towns located in the Province of Milano, Italy. These rooms are created and maintained for the sole purpose of hosting, for one or two days each month, the City Councils, therefore people and words. Those words can be inspired by passion and virtue, but also by vanity, anger, hypocrisy, convenience. A concentrate of what is human. In the Council room the fate of a number of important issues, that directly affect the daily lives of all citizens, are decided. These rooms, when not subject to the pressure of voices and words seem to breathe a sigh of relief. Relieved by the event, those rooms can be emptied of their function, and quietly and calmly ceasing to be just tools and recovering their identity as objects. Nevertheless, in this condition, it is as if each of these rooms could hold the echo of all the words that have inhabited over the years. And it's like all those voices did not ever really leave. - Un lavoro composto da 25 fotografie. Sono rappresentate le sale di Consiglio Comunale di diverse cittadine della Provincia di Milano. Luoghi creati e mantenuti al solo scopo di ospitare, per uno o due giorni ogni mese, i Consigli Comunali, quindi persone e soprattutto parole. Parole dettate da passione e nobiltà, ma anche da vanità, rabbia, ipocrisia, convenienza. Un concentrato di ciò che è umano, in un momento istituzionale, quello del Consiglio, in cui si decidono le sorti di importanti aspetti che riguardano direttamente la vita quotidiana di tutti i cittadini. Queste aule, nel momento in cui non sono soggette alla pressione di voci e parole sembrano tirare un sospiro di sollievo. The Italian justice system moves slowly, involving every day an impressive number of people. In the courtrooms there's a continuous bustle of judges, prosecutors, lawyers, defendants, witnesses, clerks, journalists and policemen. This crowding is replaced by the typical quiet of the closing hours, when the deserted courtrooms do not seem to forget the speeches and debates: a lawyer's robe thrown over a chair, a folder waiting to be rescued, marginal elements that may in some way bring to mind an idea of what happened during the trials. These are fragments of feelings, perceptible only if we take the time to observe, as external viewers, these areas when they are not used. Suddenly what you know about justice can take shape. Snapshots of particularly relevant court cases can be reminded, cases that captured our imagination over the years. We can find the opportunity to think about the importance and sensitivity of the events that take place here every day, trying to imagine the difficulties of those being judged and the heavy responsibility on those who must judge another human being. Real emotional earthquakes occur in these spaces, transformed every day into a stage on which a routine of tragedies and controversies is held. The austere judges' benches, the ominous looking cages, those crucifixes whose presence today is perhaps difficult to understand, these are some of the features within these environments, as well as the inscription: "La legge è uguale per tutti” (“The law is equal for all"), a kind of mantra, which certainly fulfills a deep need of our consciousness but that should not obscure the reality of things: "tot capita tot sententiae", each sentence depends on the personal attitude and history of each judge, a human being and not an abstract decision-making entity. The human element on the one hand makes imperfect the course of justice, but on the other it may fix, through its flexibility, some very complicated cases. The human element. Uncertain and unpredictable. In contrast to these courtrooms, so rigid and symmetrical that if you look carefully, it seems to have the duty to appear ruthless. The photographs were made in the courthouses of Asti, Bergamo, Brescia, Busto Arsizio, Como, Cremona, Lodi, Mantova, Milano, Modena, Monza, Padova, Parma, Pavia, Reggio Emilia, Rovereto, Trento, Verona and Vicenza. - “Fragments of justice” consiste in una serie di 27 fotografie nelle quali vengono rappresentate le aule di 19 tribunali italiani. La macchina della giustizia italiana si muove lentamente, coinvolgendo ogni giorno un numero impressionante di persone. Nei locali dedicati ai procedimenti si assiste ad un via vai di giudici, pubblici ministeri, avvocati, imputati, testimoni, cancellieri, giornalisti, carabinieri. A questo affollamento si alterna la quiete tipica degli orari di chiusura, durante cui le aule deserte non sembrano tuttavia scordarsi di arringhe e dibattimenti: una toga buttata su una poltrona, una cartella in attesa di essere recuperata, elementi marginali i quali possono in qualche modo portare alla mente il ricordo di ciò che avviene durante le udienze. The Italian justice system moves slowly, involving every day an impressive number of people. In the courtrooms there's a continuous bustle of judges, prosecutors, lawyers, defendants, witnesses, clerks, journalists and policemen. This crowding is replaced by the typical quiet of the closing hours, when the deserted courtrooms do not seem to forget the speeches and debates: a lawyer's robe thrown over a chair, a folder waiting to be rescued, marginal elements that may in some way bring to mind an idea of what happened during the trials. These are fragments of feelings, perceptible only if we take the time to observe, as external viewers, these areas when they are not used. Suddenly what you know about justice can take shape. Snapshots of particularly relevant court cases can be reminded, cases that captured our imagination over the years. We can find the opportunity to think about the importance and sensitivity of the events that take place here every day, trying to imagine the difficulties of those being judged and the heavy responsibility on those who must judge another human being.
